Last Modified: April 6, 2025

Easy homemade BBQ sauce made with ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, and spices. This sweet and tangy sauce is perfect for grilling, dipping, or marinating. Ready in 30 minutes using simple pantry ingredients, it’s a flavorful addition to ribs, chicken, burgers, and more.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 Tbsp paprika (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper (or to taste)
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients and stir well.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer.
  3. Simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning or sweetness if needed.
  5. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool to room temperature.
  6. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Tips

  • Simmer gently to avoid burning the sugar.
  • Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.
  • For a thicker sauce, extend simmer time slightly.
  • Use fresh garlic for stronger flavor, or substitute with 1 tsp garlic powder in a pinch.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Sweetener swap: Use honey or maple syrup instead of brown sugar.
  • Spice it up: Add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Smoky flavor: Try smoked paprika or add a few drops of liquid smoke.
  • No Worcestershire? Substitute with soy sauce or coconut aminos.

FAQs

Can I freeze BBQ sauce?
Yes, it freezes well. Let it cool completely, then store in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge before using.

Can I use this for grilling?
Absolutely. Brush it onto meats during the last few minutes of grilling to avoid burning due to the sugar content.

Is this sauce gluten-free?
It can be—just make sure your Worcestershire sauce and ketchup are certified gluten-free.
