Make homemade strawberry sauce with just three simple ingredients—fresh strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice. This easy strawberry topping is perfect for pancakes, waffles, cheesecake, ice cream, and more. With a rich, fruity flavor and a smooth texture, this recipe is great for desserts and breakfast dishes. Get tips on using fresh or frozen strawberries, storage options, and variations to customize the sauce to your taste.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and thickly sliced
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (about half a lemon)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the sliced strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
  2. Place over medium heat and bring to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. The strawberries will naturally release their juices as they cook.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20–23 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  4. Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool to room temperature. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools and even more when refrigerated.
  5. Serve warm or chilled as a topping for your favorite dishes.

Tips

  • For a smoother sauce, blend it using an immersion blender or food processor.
  • If the sauce is too thick after cooling, add a splash of water or fruit juice to loosen it up.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Use honey or maple syrup instead of sugar for a natural sweetener.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla extract for extra depth of flavor.
  • Swap strawberries for mixed berries like blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries.

FAQs

Can I use frozen strawberries?
Yes! Frozen strawberries work well. Just increase the simmering time slightly to allow extra liquid to cook off.

Can this be made ahead?
Absolutely! Store in the fridge for up to a week or freeze for up to 3 months.
