Master the best method for cooking long grain rice on the stovetop using a simple water-to-rice ratio. This easy recipe delivers fluffy, non-sticky rice with just two ingredients. Ideal for meal prep, side dishes, curries, and more.

Soft, fluffy long grain rice with no sticking or clumping—this simple stovetop method delivers perfect results every time, using just two ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 900 ml (3 3/4 cups) water
  • 540 g (2 1/2 cups) long grain rice (not quick-cook or pre-boiled)

Instructions

  1. Pour the water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add the rice (no rinsing needed), stir once to ensure it’s fully submerged.
  3. Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid.
  4. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting on your smallest burner (for gas) or low-medium on induction.
  5. Cook for 20 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. After 20 minutes, turn off the heat and remove the lid.
  7. Fluff the rice gently with a fork.

Tip: If you leave the lid on after cooking, the rice will stay hot for up to 30 minutes without affecting texture or flavor.

Tips

  • Use a heavy-bottomed pan with a tight lid to avoid burning or uneven cooking.
  • Don’t stir during cooking—this can cause the rice to break or turn sticky.
  • For best results, measure water and rice accurately.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Different rice types: This method works for basmati or jasmine rice too, but adjust water and time (e.g., 1:1.5 ratio for basmati, 12–15 min cook time).
  • Add flavor: Cook the rice in vegetable or chicken stock for extra depth, or add a bay leaf or cardamom pod while cooking.
  • Rinsing option: If you prefer less starch, rinse the rice in cold water before cooking, but it’s not required for this method.

FAQs

Can I double the recipe?
Yes, just keep the same water-to-rice ratio and use a larger pan. Cooking time may need a slight adjustment depending on volume and burner size.

Do I need to rinse the rice?
No rinsing is required in this method, but you can if you prefer less surface starch.

Why is my rice still wet or too dry?
Make sure you’re using the right heat level and a tight-fitting lid. Slight differences in burner strength or pan size can affect the result.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with curry, stir-fries, stews, or grilled meats.
  • Use as a base for rice bowls, burritos, or fried rice the next day.
  • Add herbs or a drizzle of olive oil for a simple side.
