Ingredients

Cake

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (317g)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk, room temperature
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 1/2 cups salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk or cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Make the Cake Layers

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper circles.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, beat the sugar, softened butter, and oil together for 2 to 3 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  4. Add the vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk to the batter, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix gently after each addition until just combined.
  6. Transfer 1 cup of the vanilla batter to a separate bowl.
  7. Melt the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl using short intervals, stirring every 20 seconds until smooth.
  8. Stir the melted chocolate into the reserved batter until fully combined.
  9. Divide the vanilla batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Spoon dollops of chocolate batter over the top and swirl gently with a butter knife to create a marbled pattern.
  10. Bake for 30 to 34 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges, then carefully transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Once cooled, level the cake layers if needed.

Make the Chocolate Buttercream

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cocoa powder together until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar and milk or cream gradually while mixing.
  3. Beat the frosting for about 5 minutes until light, fluffy, and smooth.
  4. Mix in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Adjust the consistency with extra powdered sugar or milk if needed.

Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of chocolate buttercream on top.
  2. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  3. Decorate with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or extra frosting if desired.

Tips

  • Use room-temperature eggs and milk for a smoother batter and even baking.
  • Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cake soft and tender.
  • Swirl the batters gently to maintain a distinct marble pattern.
  • Chill the cake layers before frosting for easier assembly.
  • Use high-quality chocolate for richer chocolate flavor.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Replace semisweet chocolate with dark chocolate for a deeper flavor.
  • Add espresso powder to the chocolate batter to enhance the chocolate taste.
  • Use cream cheese frosting instead of chocolate buttercream for a tangy twist.
  • Bake the batter in a bundt pan for a classic marble bundt cake.
  • Add chocolate chips or chopped nuts for extra texture.
