This fresh, bold guacamole is made with ripe avocados, spicy serrano peppers, and a burst of lime. Packed with flavor and texture, it’s the perfect dip, topping, or side for tacos, chips, and more.

Ingredients

  • 3 large ripe avocados
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 ½ limes)
  • 1 medium tomato, seeded and diced
  • ½ white onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped (about ½ bunch)
  • 2 serrano peppers, finely chopped (or use jalapeños for less heat)
  • 2 garlic cloves, pressed or finely minced
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Avocados:
Cut avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a flat-bottomed bowl. Use a fork or potato masher to mash to your desired texture.
  2. Add Lime Juice:
Immediately squeeze fresh lime juice over the mashed avocado to enhance flavor and prevent browning.
  3. Chop and Add Veggies:
Finely chop the onion, serrano peppers (remove seeds for less heat), and tomato (remove seeds to avoid excess moisture). Add them to the bowl.
  4. Add Garlic and Cilantro:
Press or finely mince garlic and chop the cilantro. Stir them into the guacamole.
  5. Season:
Add cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything until well combined.
  6. Serve Immediately:
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve fresh for best flavor.

Tips

  • Use ripe avocados that give slightly when pressed.
  • Avoid over-mashing for a chunkier texture.
  • Add lime juice right away to prevent browning.
  • Remove pepper seeds if you want a milder spice level.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Peppers: Substitute serrano with jalapeños or skip them entirely for a mild version.
  • Tomatoes: Use Roma tomatoes for less moisture or cherry tomatoes for added sweetness.
  • Extras: Mix in diced mango, corn, or a splash of hot sauce for a twist.
  • Onion: Red onion can be used for a slightly sweeter bite.

FAQs

Can I make guacamole ahead of time?
Yes, but it’s best fresh. To store, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface and refrigerate for up to 1 day.

What if my avocados are underripe?
Underripe avocados will be firm and bland. Let them sit at room temperature in a paper bag for a day or two to ripen.

How spicy is this recipe?
It’s medium-spicy with serrano peppers. For a milder version, use jalapeños or reduce the amount.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with tortilla chips, tacos, burritos, nachos, or grilled meats.
  • Add as a topping for avocado toast or burgers.
  • Pair with fresh vegetables for a low-carb dip.
