Watermelon Agua Fresca

Last Modified: January 7, 2026

Fresh watermelon agua fresca made with blended watermelon, lime juice, water, and fresh mint. This easy Mexican-style drink is naturally refreshing, hydrating, and perfect for summer, picnics, barbecues, and hot weather, served chilled over ice with lime wedges.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups fresh watermelon, chopped and seeded
  • Juice of 1½ limes
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 4 fresh spearmint sprigs
  • Lime wedges, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add the chopped watermelon, freshly squeezed lime juice, and water to a blender. Blend until completely smooth.
  2. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher, pressing gently to extract all the liquid. Discard the pulp.
  3. Add the mint sprigs to the pitcher, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
  4. Remove the mint sprigs if desired, add ice to the pitcher, and serve chilled with lime wedges.

Tips

  • Use very ripe watermelon for the best natural sweetness.
  • Chill the watermelon before blending to keep the drink extra cold.
  • Gently bruise the mint leaves before adding them to release more flavor.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add a small amount of honey or agave if you prefer a sweeter drink.
  • Replace lime with lemon for a slightly different citrus note.
  • Blend in a few strawberries for a watermelon-strawberry agua fresca.

FAQs

Do I need to strain the drink?
Straining is optional but gives a smoother, more traditional agua fresca texture.

How long does it keep in the fridge?
It stays fresh for up to 2 days when stored in a sealed pitcher.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve over ice on hot days as a refreshing non-alcoholic drink.
  • Pair with grilled dishes, tacos, or light summer meals.
  • Add sparkling water just before serving for a fizzy version.
