Ingredients

Creamy Vanilla Pudding Layer:

  • 2 (3.4 oz) boxes Jell-O Instant Vanilla Pudding
  • 3 ½ cups cold milk (any kind, not plant-based)
  • 8 oz Cool Whip

Cream Cheese Layer:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • ¼ cup butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Oreo Cookie Layer:

  • 15 oz Oreos (regular, include creme filling)

Optional Garnishes:

  • Gummy worms
  • Fake or edible flowers
  • Additional Oreos, cut in half

Instructions

1. Make the Creamy Vanilla Pudding Layer

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and cold milk for 5 minutes, until slightly thickened.
  2. Gently fold in the Cool Whip until fully combined. Set aside.

2. Make the Cream Cheese Mixture

  1. In a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer), beat the cream cheese and butter on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy, about 30 seconds.
  2. Add powdered sugar and mix on low speed until combined. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for another 30 seconds until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. Add the prepared pudding mixture to the cream cheese mixture and mix on medium-high speed until well combined. Stir with a spatula to ensure nothing sticks to the bottom. Refrigerate until ready to assemble.

3. Prepare the Oreo Cookie Layer

  1. Crush Oreos in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Alternatively, place Oreos in a large Ziplock bag and crush with a rolling pin or mallet.

4. Assemble the Dirt Cake

  1. Spoon one-third of the pudding mixture (~2 ½ cups) into the bottom of an 8.25” trifle bowl (or large glass bowl) and spread evenly.
  2. Add one-third of the Oreo crumbs (~1 cup) over the pudding layer, spreading evenly. Tip: Build the cookie layer slightly higher at the edges for a “dirt mound” effect.
  3. Repeat with the remaining pudding and cookie layers two more times.
  4. Alternatively, assemble layers in individual cups (9 oz works well).

5. Chill and Serve

  1. Cover the assembled Dirt Cake and refrigerate for at least 12 hours.
  2. Before serving, top with gummy worms, fake or edible flowers, or additional Oreos.
  3. Serve in bowls or individual cups. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Tips

  • Ensure the cream cheese and butter are fully softened to avoid lumps in the cream layer.
  • Whisk pudding mixture thoroughly to get a light, airy texture.
  • Use a spatula to gently fold in ingredients to preserve creaminess.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Substitute Oreos with chocolate sandwich cookies or gluten-free cookies.
  • Use flavored pudding (chocolate or butterscotch) for a twist.
  • Replace Cool Whip with homemade whipped cream for a fresher flavor.

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, Dirt Cake tastes even better after chilling overnight.

Can I use plant-based milk?
For best texture, use regular milk. Plant-based milk may make the pudding thinner.

How long will it last?
Stored in an airtight container in the fridge, it will last up to 5 days.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve in individual cups for parties or kid-friendly events.
  • Add edible flowers for a festive presentation.
  • Pair with chocolate milk or a light fruit punch.
